SCOTLAND 9 - FRANCE 18 HALF TIME
14.40: Hello and welcome from Murrayfield. There's a great atmosphere in Edinburgh's West End and the crowd have just been treated to a tribute to Bill McLaren. The great man was loved thhold e Wold over and he made the game we love all the more special
14:43: There a cracking game in prospect today. I, for one am well excited. This has got to be my favourite 6 Nations fixture
14:49: Les Bleus have just entered the arena. Oh my, they're a big bunch!
14:56: A belting rendition of Le Marseillaise has just been played and now the Murrayfield faithful are putting their all into Oh Flower of Scotland
14:59: The pitch is being cleared of the band and we're all set for Kick Off. Can Scotland win their opening match of the 6 Nations for the first time since 2006?
00" Here we go. A thumping tackle from Rougerie straight from Kick off, but Scotland on and clear their lines. Kelly Brown was absolutely nailed there!
1" Scotland's scrum wheels, but the backs show their early intentions with good, quick, wide ball
2" This monstrous french backline are putting in some massive hits. Rougerie again, this time on Beattie. I don't know how either of them got back to their feet after that
4" Well, well. Rougerie can't continue. Two bulldozing hits in the first 4 minutes and he's had enough. Early substitution sees Clerc come onto the left wing
8" PENALTY - Paterson with a chance to open the scoring...which, of course he does. SCOTLAND 3 - 0 FRANCE
8" Max Evans caught an intercepted pass and almost made the line, before Morrison and Kellock both went close
11" Clerc, straight into the thick of it. He raced through onto a chip kick, collected before being tap tackled and then smothered by magnificent by Thom Evans. Scotland survive...just
12" Big pressure here on the Scotland line. French scrum, five metres out
13" The pressure continues as the scrum gets set for a 4th attempt. Scotland will do well to come away from here unscathed
14" TRY - Bastareaud - And the inevitable has just happened. A good tackle by Max Evans holds up the attack, but quick ball and a delightfully floated miss-pass by Trihn-duc finds it's way to the centre and you simply don't stop a man of that size from there. The conversion is missed
SCOTLAND 3 - 5 FRANCE
18" Brilliant lineout ball sts up some slick Scottish play. Johnnie Beattie broke the line, but he just couldn't offload to the onrushing Cusiter. Great stuff from the Scots! scrum France on their own line
19" The crowd look to inspire the players with a rendition of Oh Flower of Scotland
20" Dickinson punches another hole in the french defence and Godman follows it up with a well delivered kick into the french 22. This Scotland side a putting on quite a display of attacking rugby. Now, we just need some points for their efforts
22" Fantastic running from Godman and Morrison brings Scotland into french territory
23" Heart in the mouth moment there for the scots. Trihn-Duc charged down Godman's kick, but unbelieveable tracking back by Lamont to stop the fly-half. This game really has everything going for it!
28" PENALTY - Morgan Parra converts from straight in front
SCOTLAND 3 - 8 FRANCE
29" PENALTY- Lamont stands up his opposite man, Fall and breaks down the wing before releasing Cusiter. Scotland are once again just stopped, but Paterson has a chance to close the gap with a penalty. Well done, Chris - straight through the middle
SCOTLAND 6 - 8 FRANCE
32" TRY - The french back row really get to a ruck quickly and clear it out. Overlap for the centre Bastareaud and the 17 and a half stone man powers over for his 2nd try of the afternoon. Parra magnificently adds the extras
SCOTLAND 6 - 15 FRANCE
35" This has been Scotland's problem for a while. We don't seem to be able to put away half chances. The scots have to be careful this game doesn't get away from them. The usually reliable defence has now been breached twice. Time to step it up, boys
37" Good rampaging run by Beattie, but Paterson's kick is charged down! The French must score...
38" ...but the Scottish forwards hold firm and turn the ball over. Phew!
40" HALF TIME - SCOTLAND 6 - 15 FRANCE
It's been a performance that showed much promise, but essentially a case of same old story. The early parts of the game the Scots showed some really enterprising rugby, but their finishing ability once again let them down on more than one occassion. The French haven't done anything special, other than taking their chances and that's the real difference here. Scotland need to come out all guns blazing in the 2nd half and get on the scoreboard before the French get out of sight.
15:56 The French are first out for the 2nd half. Looking at Bastareaud - he's a real cannonball of a man!
15:57 And the Scot's join the field. This is a big 40 minutes for Andy Robinson's men
41" Godman kicks off...straight into touch and France are on the attack from the scrum
41" Bastareaud's hands let him down for the first time today as he knocks on in the Scottish 22
43" PENALTY - John Barclay goes off his feet and Morgan Parra will have a shot at goal from the left hand touchline. Good strike, three points. France in controll
SCOTLAND 6 - 18 FRANCE
Official Murrayfield attendance today is 61,584. It would be nice for them to see a try for the home side
45" France look to freshen up the front row and Ducalcon comes on to earn his first international cap
47" Big hit by Thom Evans to thump Clement Poitenaud, but the French are threatening again. Trinh-Duc slices a drop goal attempt just wide of the posts.
49" With Scotland struggling to get the ball out of their own half, the French forward go over the top and allow Godman to clear. We're in French territory!
50" Good opportunity here for Scotland. 30 metres out and they've now got a new man to face in the scrum as Szarzeski comes on at hooker.
51" PENALTY - Benjamin Fall races the whole length of the field, but the flying winger is called back for a Penalty to Scotland. Paterson does what he does best
SCOTLAND 9 - 18 FRANCE
52" Substitution and it's a big one. Godman off, Southwell on. Paterson goes to fly half. What can he condure up?
54" Lovely ball off the top sends the bullish Jauzion on the crash ball. Drinh-Duc threats a kick deep into Sottish territory. Parra knocks on, but the French smell blood here.
57" Clement Poitenaud now knocks on from an accurate Cusiter box kick, but far too much of the game's being played in the Scot's half. The French travelling support are in full voice now. it's been an ideal first 3/4 of the match for them
58" Szarzeski breaks down the wing. He doesn't look like a hooker and he certainly doesn't run like one. Great turn of pace from the substitute
59" PENALTY - France are beginning to turn the screw. Left footed, Parra's effort sails just wide. Scores remain the same
62" France attack the blindside and Harinordoquy show his full range of skills with some magnificent handling
63" Beattie again on the charge. He breaks the line and makes a ten yard gain. The Glasgow No. *'s been one of Scotland's better players today.
64" And again Beattie breaks. He's everywhere and we're actually putting a few phases together. 13 and counting...
65" Scott Lawson comes on for Ross Ford
66" Paterson beginning to controll things from fly half. Max Evans shows his pace, but the Scots concede a penalty.
67" Bonnaire on for France and he's joined on the field by Richie Gray. The 6 feet 9" second row comes on for his international debut
68" Great clock management by France. A rumbling maul is followed up by an up and under, collected by Fall and then a pin-point kick by Parra into the corner. Scotland make a mess of the line-out and it's a scrum to the French, five metres from the Scottish line
69" Oh, oh. Michalak's on for the French. If he's on song, he's got the ability to finish this game off
70" The back row pick up and go blind. Serious pressure mounting on the Scottish line, but great defence by the Scots and they survive. For now anyway
71" After scoring a double, Bastareaud takes a well earned rest. David Marty comes on in his place
74" Great break by Lamont. He sprints 40 metres up field, but possession is turned over.
77" Big hit by Bonnaire on Lawson sends the replacement hooker bouncing backwards. Time is running out and to be quite honest, Scotland aren't even threatening to score a try
78" Andy Robinson is a real picture of glum. there are a few questions to face after this performance
79" There's a mismatch in size. Domingo "boshes" into Cusiter. Ouch!
80" FULL TIME
SCOTLAND 9 - 18 FRANCE
A truely professional display by France, but after much promise early on Scotland will be really disappointed with their performance. The French took their chances thanks to quick thinking, delivery and the power of centre Mathieu Bastareaud. The twent two year old Stade Francais player is a real star in the making and certainly one to watch for the rest of the tournament. Scotland's 2nd half performance lacked cutting edge and they never really looked like they could mount a comeback. Having said that, Number 8 Johnnie Beattie had a good game and was one of the few players that looked to break the gain-line. Cardiff next for Andy Robinson's men and that will be far from easy. There's plenty for the Scottish coaching staff to sort out before then.
