Edinburgh suffered a comprehensive 45-0 home defeat in the opening round of the Heineken Cup as Saracens ran out winners at Murrayfield.

Charlie Hodgson scored 25 points for the visitors as the home team failed to register a single point over the 80 minutes.

Hodgson’s try added to similar scores from Joel Tomkins, Owen Farrell, Chris Ashton and Alex Goode. He also added four penalties and as many conversions as Saracens gained a bonus point.

Tomkins’ try on his Heineken Cup debut set the English side on their way with Hodgson’s boot ensuring they had a 16-0 lead at the break.

Injuries to Greig Laidlaw and Tim Visser didn’t help matters for the Scots and things got worse as Hogdson continued to impress with the boot.

Farrell added a second try just before the hour mark before several poor tackling attempts allowed Saracens to score again before Goode added a fourth late on.

Hodgson had the final word with a try to cap a fine individual display after charging down Harry Leonard’s attempted clearing kick.
