Rory Lawson looks set to miss Scotland' Six Nations opener with England this weekend, STV understands.
The scrum half didn't train with Andy Robinson's side on Monday, working out instead with the Scotland A squad ahead of their fixture with England on Friday.
Either Mike Blair or Chris Cusiter look set to start at scrum half in the Calcutta Cup clash, with Lawson left out.
Coach Robinson will announce his 22-man squad for the fixture on Tuesday, cutting his pool down from 35 players.
Joe Ansbro has already been ruled out with a back injury, while Steven Shingler is unavailable for selection.
The latter is currently involved in a nationality dispute between Wales and Scotland, and will not be able to feature until the conclusion of an IRB investigation.
David Denton will be available for selection, having recovered from a hamstring injury.
