Six Nations: Scotland Calcutta Cup team opts for experience over flair

Scotland have named one new cap and two other players making their first start in the RBS 6 Nations Championship for Saturday’s Calcutta Cup clash with England at Murrayfield.

Edinburgh Rugby wing Lee Jones gets his international debut, after some sparkling form in the league and Heineken Cup with his club colleagues David Denton and Ross Rennie starting in the competition for the first time. The trio are joined by experienced and battle hardened campaigners – six players in the squad have won more than 50 caps.

But many rugby fans will be disappointed to see Dan Parks back at stand-off despite the injury to Ruaridh Jackson, his obvious successor at fly half. They would have preferred to see Edinbugh's Greg Laidlaw or even up and coming Duncan Weir given a shot.

And the centre paring of Sean Lamont - usally far more effective on the wing - and Nick de Luca, the man who failed to gather a bouncing ball against England in the World Cup with the tryline at his mercy - will not boost confidence that Scotland can end their try-scoring drought.

On the other hand, the pack is strong enough to be able to leave John Barclay and former catpain Al Kellocck on the bench.

Head Coach Andy Robinson said today: “Form has played a part in selection, with Edinburgh’s qualification for the Heineken Cup quarter-finals and Glasgow’s performances in the RaboDirect PRO12 meaning that competition for places has intensified, particularly in the back-row.”

The game is a sell-out and Robinson and the Scotland team are calling on fans at the 67,144 capacity Murrayfield and throughout the country on Saturday to wear blue and show their support for the side.
