The history of Andy Murray: his rise through the rankings

2006

February: Wins first ATP tour title in San Jose. Murray beat two Grand Slam Champions, Hewitt and Roddick, on the way to becoming the fourth youngest player ever to win on the tour. In the same month, Murray breaks into the ATP top 50 for the first time. Only Borg, Hewitt, Nadal and Roddick had managed it at a younger age. He also becomes the British number one, replacing Tim Henman.

August: Reaches final of the Legg Mason Classic, losing to Arnaud Clement. He then defeats Roger Federer at Cincinnati Masters to reach the quarter-finals. He and Rafael Nadal were the only players to defeat the world’s best player that year.

2007

January: Records widest winning margin at the Australian Open, 6-0, 6-0, 6-1 en route to face Rafael Nadal in the fourth round. Nadal won in five sets in what Murray said was the best performance of his career to date.

February: Defends his San Jose title with a win over Ivo Karlovic in the final. He and brother Jamie became the first siblings ever to take the singles and doubles titles.

March: Misses the French Open, Queens and Wimbledon through injury.

June: Reaches career high No. 8 in ATP rankings.

September:
Leads Great Britain back into 2008 Davis Cup World Group by winning both of his singles matches against Croatia.

October: Captures third career ATP title in St Petersburg (defeating Fernando Verdasco in the final).

November: Finishes season with best indoor record on ATP tour (23-5). He then splits with £750,000 a year coach Brad Gilbert, taking the unusual step of appointing his own fitness team, with Miles Maclagan taking the role of head coach.

2008

January: Captures his fourth career ATP title in Doha, beating Stanislas Wawrinka in the final. He then creates controversy when he withdraws from a Davis Cup match against Argentina through injury. The move followed a poor performance at the Australian Open. Elder brother Jamie suggested that if the match had been a Grand Slam tournament, Andy would have played.

February: Captures fifth career ATP title in Marseille, beating Mario Ancic in the final.

March: Knocks Roger Federer out in first round of Dubai Championship, to move to a 2-1 record against the world number one.

July: Reaches the fourth round at Wimbledon, after coming from two sets down in an epic match against Richard Gasquet. Facing Rafael Nadal in the next round, Murray lost to the eventual winner.

August: Lifts his first Masters Series shield in Cincinnati after defeating world number 3 Novak Djokovic for the second time in a week, 7-6, 7-6.

September: Reaches his first ever Grand Slam final at the US Open final, where he is beaten by Federer. In the semi-final Murray finally defeated Rafael Nadal in their sixth encounter, ending Nadal’s 19-match unbeaten run in Grand Slam matches. As a result, he reaches a career high ATP ranking of four in world.

October: Beats Federer in semi-finals of the 2008 Madrid Masters before defeating Frenchman Gilles Simon, making him the first Briton ever to win multiple Masters titles. He then wins the St Petersburg Open again, beating Andrey Golubev in the final to take his fifth title of the 2008 season.
