I feel good: Andy Murray is ready to make history.
Andy Murray has said he is in the form of his life as he closed in on his first Grand Slam title. The Scot made it through to Sunday’s Australian Open final with a four set victory over Marin Cilic and will face Jo-Wilfried Tsonga or Roger Federer as he bids for a first major title.
Murray has been in imperious form so far in Melbourne and has dropped only one set en route to the final. That blip came against Cilic but the Scot turned the match on its head with a magnificent forehand in the second set. The British number one confirmed what many observes felt by saying he was showing his best form in a major tournament.
"This is the best I've played at a slam," he said.
"Obviously the match against Rafa was great. Tonight, the majority of the match was great as well. I feel good. Physically I'm going to be fresh for the final."
Though the other semi-final does not take place until Friday, Murray said that he expected to be playing Roger Federer in Sunday’s final. The Scot has a good record against Federer but said that beating the Swiss icon would be the perfect end to the tournament.
"Federer's record in slams is amazing. So it would be incredibly tough to beat him," he said.
"But if I was to win a slam against him in the final, it would make it extra special."
Murray was responsible for what was arguably the shot of the tournament so far. Trailing by a set, the Scot chased down a net cord and saw Cilic lob him beautifully but somehow got back and unleashed a precise forehand past the Croat that changed the match. Looking back on the match, Murray acknowledged that it was a pivotal moment.
"That was really important because I don't want to say the match was slipping away from me, but the momentum was definitely with him," he said.
"A few things weren't quite going my way and he played some really aggressive tennis and was putting me under a lot of pressure.
"I was obviously happy I managed to turn it around because, like I say, he started to dictate the match. That shot made a big difference."
