Roger Federer wins the Australian Open.
Murray 3-6 4-6 6-7 (13-11) Federer
Epic. After Murray begins with a cracking ace the pair trade mini-breaks in the tie break. Another ace to make it 5-4 gives Murray momentum and he makes it 6-4 and two break points with a forehand into Federer's feet. Federer saves the first and on the second after a long exchange Murray has an open court in which to place an easy forehand but he puts it into the net. Murray has a third set point at 7-6 but puts a forehand wide after a 23-shot rally and Federer hangs on again. Murray rescued championship point and then missed another set point. Every point seems to bring another cat and mouse rally and a lob in at the net sees Federer win a crucial moment to take championship point for the second time. Murray saves with a remarkable pass and forces an error from Federer on the next to make it 11-10 Murray and set point. The Scot can't build on it and Federer pulls it back to set up another championship point. This time he make no mistake with a forehand that murray can't get enough on and sends into the net. It's all over. Federer wins.
Murray 3-6 4-6 6-6 Federer*
Federer holds serve pretty easily and takes the third set to a tiebreak. All or nothing now.
Murray 3-6 4-6 6-5 Federer*
A couple of booming serves get Murray off to a good start and he is quickly at 4-15. Federer makes him work a bit harder though, clawing back to deuce. There are a cuple of tense rallies before Murray takes the game with an ace, but only after Hawkeye shows the decision to be correct by a matter of millimetres.
*Murray 3-6 4-6 5-5 Federer
After the elation of that earlier break Murray looks deflated again. At 30-15 he sends a wild forehand high and wide and looks disgusted. Federer lets him back in again after putting a drop shot into the net but Murray can't put him off and he closes it out. Federer has taken the last three games and looks back in control.
Murray 3-6 4-6 5-4 Federer*
Is that Murray's big chance gone? Federer breaks back in a long and tense game. Both players make errors but Murray misses the biggest chances and though his first serv is looking good, Federer is making the returns. Murray saves break point and takes it to deuce twice but a weak dink over the net gives Federer his chance and he snaps it up. All level in the third then but that game was a huge blow for Murray.
*Murray 3-6 4-6 5-3 Federer
No cracks in Federer's serve this time. He wins the game to love and it is now Murray serving for the set.
Murray 3-6 4-6 5-2 Federer*
That's just what he needed. After getting the break Murray hammers home his service game and doesn't give Federer a sniff. His fizzing forehand on the first point may well be the shot of the match so far and he finishes with an ace to give Federer something to think about.
*Murray 3-6 4-6 4-2 Federer
Incredible. Just as I say Federer won't make any mistakes, Murray cranks it up and gets the break. He races to a 40-0 lead and three break points but Federer gets his first serve in twice to pull it back to 40-30. They're both in at the net and exchange volleys but it is the Scot who finds the pass. that wide-open mouthed roar we saw last time is back and Murray is back in this.
Murray 3-6 4-6 3-2 Federer*
Maybe it isn't his back that is the problem as Murray is now clutrching his right thigh. It doesn't seem to be restricting his movement though and he holds serve. Murray has sorted his own game out but he now needs Federer to make mistakes or give him some hope and at the moment that doesn't look like happening.
*Murray 3-6 4-6 2-2 Federer
All level in the third set as another game goes with serve. No real danger there for Federer as Murray takes only one point. Worryingly, he grimaces after a couple of points and it looks like he is suffering from a little back pain.
Murray 3-6 4-6 2-1 Federer*
Much better service game from Murray. He takes it to love. No fuss, no drama, no long rallies. Finishes with an ace.
*Murray 3-6 4-6 1-1 Federer
That was a chance not taken for Murray. After taking it to deuce, Murray gets break point and the pair play a long, mesmerising rally. Murray pulls Federer out of position, runs in to palce the finishing shot and misses, putting it wide.He thumps his racquet off the ground in frustration. Federer, emotionless, watched the outburst and puts the pressure back on, serving uot the game.
Murray 3-6 4-6 1-0 Federer*
First serve is looking better from Murray and he manages to hold without too much sweat this time. The crowd is getting behind him but he doesn't even seem to know they are there. He's focused and determined not to go down without a fight.
Federer wins the second set.
*Murray 3-6 4-6 Federer
This is looking insurmountable now. Federer is serving notice to the up and comers that he is still at the peak of hois powers. A faultless service has it looking like he will take the game to love but Murray pulls back a point to make it 40-15. Federer is unruffled and comes to the net to slam a winner into the corner and move two sets up. We can hope but it just doesn't look like Murray can take the next three.
Murray 3-6 4-5 Federer*
Murray holds serve without having to dig deep for once. He finds the corners and only concedes one point to a stunning forehand from Federer. next game is crucial, you have to say. break back and the momentum swings Murray's way. lose and he goes two sets down and has a mountain to climb.
*Murray 3-6 3-5 Federer
Effortless stuff from Federer on his service game. It's all over in the blink of an eye thanks to a ridiculously good first serve and the pressure is back on Murray to hold or lose the set.
Murray 3-6 3-4 Federer*
Big game again. Federer is in full-on champion mode, racing to a 40-0 lead and three break points. Murray claws it back to deuce only to see Federer take advantage. With another break point Federer makes a mistake at the end of a long rally, missing an easy pass and letting Murray back in. The Scot scrambles the next two points to hold but is having to work mighty hard just to keep in this.
*Murray 3-6 2-4 Federer
Murray will need better luck if he is to win this. After a 21-shot rally he clips a low shot over the net from deep and Federer's return hits the cord before dropping over, leaving Murray no chance of reaching it. He still manages to force deuce but Federer shades it yet again. He looks to be in control and Murray will need to change things up to rattle him.
Murray 3-6 2-3 Federer*
Big game for Murray there. Federer had two break points and would have gone 4-1 up and probably taken the set but the Scot digs deep. An ace gives him hope and a strong backhand brings things level. Two big serves take the game and you feel that that may be a little bit of a turning point. Federer is still playing wonderfully but Murray's resilience paid off there and he may take heart from that game. Still needs a break though.
*Murray 3-6 1-3 Federer
Murray's head goes down for the first time so far after he fails to take advantage of a Fed error. He chases down a poor lob and looks like going 30-15 up but instead of hitting a winner down the sideline he finds the net and looks annoyed with himself. Federer is ice cool and holds his advantage with no further problems.
Murray 3-6 1-2 Federer*
Uh-oh. Federer has brought his A game and gets the first break of the second set. Murray is thoroughly outclassed in this game with Federer's genius on show at 0-30. Murray gets his first serve in, comes to the net to volley only to see Fed rifle a cross-court forehand beyond him. Murray needs to break back quickly or this is going to run away from him.
*Murray 3-6 1-1 Federer
No real problems for Federer on his service game. Murray takes a couple of points on long rallies but he is coming from behind and never looks like getting the break. The final point is a little odd looking as the ball comes off therim of Federer's racquet, confusing Murray but the game is won and we are level at 1-1 in the second set.
Murray 3-6 1-0 Federer*
Change of shirt from blue to white for Murray and the change seems to do him good. After dropping the first point, the Scot takes the next four with possibly his best spell so far. He is whacking them left and right, making Federer work and waiting for the mistakes to come. he picks them off well and gets off to a good start in the second set.
Federer wins the first set.
*Murray 3-6 0-0 Federer
Federer takes the first set. Murray makes an unforced error on the first point and the Swiss doubles his advantage with an ace. There's almost a repeat of murray's magic from the Cilic match when he tries to curl a shot around the net post but it doesn't come off and Federer clinically sees out the game and the set. The balance has shifted in Federer's favour over the last couple of games and Murray needs to respond.
Murray 3-5 Federer*
Murray starts with a double fault of his own and now has only 50% of his first serve in . Must do better. Things go from bad to worse when he finds himself 30-0 down after Federer returns a big serve beautifully. Ths Scot recovers to 30-30 but loses a decisive point when he is forced wide, powers a backhand cross-court and sees his opponent place a winner down the line.Federer then nails another forehand winner and is serving for the set now.
*Murray 3-4 Federer
A double fault from Federer makes it 30-15 in Murray's favour but his forehand lets him down twice in a row. Federer places powerful shots to Murray's left and then right to move to 40-15 and gets his serve back on track to see out the game.
Murray 3-3 Federer*
Murray holds serve but it isn't easy. A great angled approach shot catches Federer out to go to 40-15 and when a Murray backhand is called out he challenges. He is right to do so and on the replayed point he hits a booming serve that Federer can't return.
*Murray 2-3 Federer
Another game marked out with long baseline rallies and Murray is making his opponent work for every point. Federer has made nine unforced errors already today The Scot gets two break points but Federer gets himself out of bother and takes the game with two aces in a row.
Murray 2-2 Federer*
Murray's first serve is letting him down a little and he is 15-30 down and looking liek he will be broken again. Federer hits one long and Murray challenges. Hawkeye backs him up to keep him in it. A 19-shot rally sees the British number one dig it out from his feet a couple of times before Federer misjudges a backhand that lands out on the left by a couple of feet and brings the score level at 2-2.
*Murray 1-2 Federer
Now that's an answer. Murray breaks back and shows Federer he isn't the only class act on court today. At 15-0 a Fed drop shot looked to have caught Murray out but he chases it down to whip the ball down the line. A cracking passing shot puts the Scot 40-15 up and and a cross-court rocket takes the game. This is going to be a cracker.
Murray 0-2 Federer*
Federer gets an early break and shows he is on top form. A backhand down the line gives him three break points and after a rally that sees him playing to Murray's backhand he rifles a winner into the corner and takes the advantage early on.
*Murray 0-1 Federer
Murray takes the first two points but Federer isn't rattled and wins the next three. Murray forces an error to take it to deuce but the Swiss closes out to take take the game. Decent start.
8.40am The roof has been opened and we are about to get started. Federer to serve first. on the scoring, the asterisk will denote who will serve next.
8.35am The finalists are warming up and we are about ready to get underway. I'm feeling nervous just watching. Got a feeling we are in for an epic final and if Murray can show the form he has displayed so far then there's no reason why he can't lift the title. This morning's newspapers said there is already a campaign to see Murray knighted if he gets that win. Sir Andy Murray? I like the sound of that.
8.30am These two met in the US Open final in 2008 and Federer came out on top but Murray says he is a different player now.
"I was only 20 when I played him in that US Open final," he said. "Twenty was pretty young when I played my first slam final. A year and a half, two years later, I just feel physically more mature, mentally more mature.
"I just have a lot more experience in these sorts of situations now. I have a game that can cause Roger problems. I have played him a lot of times now so I know the way you need to play against him.
“There's not going to be too many surprises on the court tomorrow. So I know what to expect. I know how he's going to play. It's up to me, like I said, to play my best."
8.25am Murray looks relaxed as he heads out to the court. Federer is all smiles and both players say they are looking forward to a good match. Minutes away now and you have to wonder what goes through the players minds when they are this close to a final.
8.20am Murray has had an extra day's rest over Federer after coming through his semi-final on Thursday. The British number one has cut out training between matches in order to keep his energy levels up and avoid injury. That's part of a new approach Murray and his coaches have brought in this year to take him on to the next level. Our man missed out on a family Christmas to train in Miami in December and jetted out to Australia early to acclimatise.
8.15am It's a full house in Melbourne and fellow Scot and Olympic hero Chris Hoy is among the spectators. There's a global audience watching on television waiting to see if Murray can make history and in his home town of Dunblane the local pub has been granted an early license so Andy's fans can cheer him on. it's a bit early for a pint but I can imagine there will be some who will want something to calm the nerves. It's not too long until we get started and the excitement is building.
8.10am The weather should make the young Scotsman feel at home. Despite it being the height of summer in Australia, it has been bucketing down in Melbourne. The rain has stopped for the moment but the roof at the Rod Laver Arena has been closed over. it's going to get hot in there.
8.05am Murray has beaten Kevin Anderson, Marc Gicquel, Florent Serra, John Isner, Rafael Nadal and Marin Cilic to get this far. He hasn't disappointed but the man himself knows he will have to find another level of performance to beat Federer, who is competing in his 22nd Grand Slam final.
"I'm going to need to play my best match ever," Murray said. "I'm totally aware of that going into the match. That's what I plan on doing. I'll try and play my best. If I do, I've got a good chance of winning."
8.00am Good morning all. Sunday may be a day of rest for most but for Andy Murray it is a day of reckoning. The Australian Open title is within touching distance for the Scot but one man stands in his way. Roger Federer is one of the greatest players of the modern era and isn't likely to make it easy for Murray. The Swiss superstar rarely disappoints in Grand Slam finals so Britain's finest will have to be at his best to make history. So far he has shown he is in good form, can he keep it going for one more day and end that 74-year wait? Fingers crossed.
