A frustrated Andy Murray has been knocked out of the French Open after losing his fourth round match to Czech Tomas Berdych in three sets 6-4 7-5 6-3.

The Scot never quite adapted to his opponent's powerful forehands throughout the match however, the weather conditions  sparked a series of furious outbursts from Murray as he complained about the condition of the court following a 36-minute rain delay.

The world number four started poorly as the 15th seed set the tone for the match early on with a mixture of punishing forehands and some stunning net play.

Murray was forced to save four break points in his opening two service games against the Czech, who has not dropped a set in his French Open challenge.

The Scot fought back to save two set points in game eight but some forceful returns from the 24-year-old allowed him to serve out for the set 6-4.

Murray’s form got worse moving into the second set after losing six straight points from 40-0 up to surrender his serve.

The Scot produced some of his best play to avoid conceding in a double-break.

Capitalising on an a Berdych error, Murray was finally handed a break point with the Czech dropping serve all too easily with a misplaced backhand.

Both men held comfortably as Murray took a 4-3 lead for the first time in the match however, heavy rain and windy conditions stalled play.

The 23-year-old’s feisty personality began to show as he complained to umpire Cedric Mourier for not putting the covers over the court, saying: "The court's wet enough as it is. Look at the court rather than the weather."

Mourier eventually agreed and the players departed from their seats at 8.03pm.

It looked unlikely that play would continue however, the rain subsided and the covers were removed at 8.20pm, with play resuming shortly afterwards.

After a 36 minute rain break, Murray’s momentum seemed to have gone as he complained about the damp conditions of the court.

He said: "How are we meant to play when we can't stand on the court?"

A seemingly-unflustered Berdych remained focused on his game, breaking the Scot 6-5 with a flurry of winners.

The Czech continued the blitz to serve out the set and seal a two sets to love lead.

Moving into the third round, Murray was forced to repeat his nail-biting comeback against Richard Gasquet to have any chance of progressing to the next round.

Despite his continued frustrations about the condition of the clay, Murray’s serve improved, placing himself 30-0 up in game seven before a double fault and an errant backhand gifted Berdych four successive points and the first break.

The Czech’s passage to the quarter-final was made all the easier with three match points on Murray's serve, sealing his victory in two hours and 16 minutes.
