Paul Lawrie says he is refusing to accept his Ryder Cup place is guaranteed, despite sitting second in the rankings.
The Aberdonian finished joint second at the PGA Championship at Wentworth to move up to 29th in the world rankings and second in the Ryder Cup points race.
A final round of 66 helped Lawrie pick up a cheque for £312,000, which will go a long way to securing his return to the European Ryder Cup team.
He has also overtaken Martin Laird in the world rankings, making him Scotland’s top-ranked player for the first time in his career.
However Lawrie, who was among a group of 30 European players to be measured for clothing to be worn in the Ryder Cup, is refusing to accept his place at Medinah, Chicago this September is a sure thing.
He said: “My goal is to play one hole at a time, one tournament at a time and see what happens. I will play as hard as I can and if I’m on the list when it comes out after the Johnnie Walker Championships then it will be a great year.
“I don’t think anything is over until that list comes out. You just play as hard as you can and keep going.”
The 43-year-old said sinking more putts has been the key to his impressive recent form that has seen him record six top-10 finishes from 11 starts along with victory in the Qatar Masters.
He added: “I have been playing that way for a while to be fair but all of a sudden I’m a putt less each day than I was two or three years ago and it’s amazing that with four shots a week you go from 30th to top ten each week.
“I have been saying that for a long time to the guys who have been asking what’s going on. All of a sudden I’m putting better and even yesterday it could have been three or four less and that’s not being silly but 66 is still a great score.”
