Fellow Brit Mark Cavendish won stage 18 before being greeted with a big hug from his team-mate.

Wiggins: "That's why I came straight from the finish just now to warm down for a better performance.

"That's better than hanging around at the finish just to talk about the weather.

"As soon as we finished the stage we started to concentrate on the time-trial."

There's clear mutual respect between the pair and Wiggins is in no doubt to how big a part Cavendish has played in the Tour so far.

Wiggins said: "He's been an incredible team-mate the last couple of weeks. It's nice to be able to pay him back.

"It's been hard every morning, thinking about the GC (general classification) and maybe sacrificing some sprint stages.

"Nine times out of 10 Cav finishes it off when you do something like that.

"And once again he showed, if there was any doubt, that he is the fastest man in the world."
