Celtic midfielder Ki Sung Yueng converted the winning penalty to end Team GB’s hopes of medal at the London 2012 Olympics.
The 23-year-old stepped up to fire the ball past Jack Butland after Daniel Sturridge had seen his spot-kick saved by goalkeeper Jung Sung-ryong.
Neither side could find a winner in normal time with the score tied at 1-1. South Korea took the lead when Sunderland striker Ji Dong-won but Team GB levelled through an Aaron Ramsey penalty.
Ramsey then missed from the spot with five minutes to go until half-time.
Despite numerous chances the match ended all-square before proceeding to a shoot-out.
Both sides scored their first four kicks before Chelsea striker Sturridge faltered with his effort.
That gave Ki the chance to book his country’s place in the semi-finals and he made no mistake to send Stuart Pearce’s men out.
