Darren Ferguson - son of Manchester United manager Sir Alex - is believed to have parted company with English Championship side Peterborough United.

News of Ferguson's impending dismissal emerged on Monday evening, but neither Ferguson nor the club were willing to confirm or deny reports that the Scot was on his way out after two and a half years as manager.

An official statement is yet to be made by Peterborough United, but director of football Barry Fry has pre-empted a formal announcement by praising Ferguson for his time with the club. It is also reported that players were informed at morning training on Tuesday that Ferguson was no longer in charge.

Former Peterborough boss Fry commented on Tuesday: "I and the club would like to thank him [Ferguson] for his miraculous achievements with the total support of the chairman in the near three years he has been at the club and we wish him and his family all the best in the future. Nothing surprises me in football."

The Posh occupy bottom spot in the league with 16 games gone, although they are by no means cut adrift from the pack, and lost 3-1 to promotion favourites Newcastle United at the weekend.

Just two seasons ago, Peterborough were playing in England's fourth tier, but Ferguson guided them to two unexpected back-to-back promotions to bring them to within just one division of the Premier League.

Ferguson was tipped as “the best young manager in the country” by Posh chairman Darragh McAnthony after their promotion to the Championship and rejected advances from Reading to take the 37-year-old to the Madejski Stadium.

His record as manager was impressive, winning over 50% of his games and finishing second in both of his seasons at the helm, resulting in automatic promotion. His teams have also been free scoring, with 162 league goals scored in the previous two seasons.

Peterborough were expected to struggle at Championship level given their meteoric rise and have won just twice in 16 outings this campaign. Roy Keane's Ipswich Town had occupied bottom spot until last weekend, but defeat to Newcastle and a draw for Keane's team at Reading lifted them one point ahead of Posh.

Ex-Reading manager Steve Coppell and one-time England caretaker boss Peter Taylor are the early favourites for Ferguson's job.
