Elise Christies hopes of Olympic success in her strongest event ended in Vancouver’s Pacific Coliseum on Saturday. The British skater failed to progress from the heats in the short track 1500m.
Christie finished fourth in her heat of six skaters, one place short of advancing to the semi-finals. Korean Cho Ha-Ri won the heat in 2:22.928, with Canada's Kalyna Roberge second in 2:23.619 and Bulgarian Evgenia Radanova third in 2:23.698. Christie finished two 10ths of a second behind the third qualifying spot.
The 19-year old had already suffered a blow when she lost in the heats of the 500m, complaining afterwards that she was bumped by a Korean rival. The failure in the 1500m leaves the 1000m as her only remaining medal hope.
"I was just really nervous I think," a disappointed Christie said. "I just messed it up.
"I'd raced Radanova all year and beaten her every time and God knows what happened.
"Maybe I let the whole experience get the best of me, I don't know. I've still got the 1000m so I'll move on and get on with it."
The Scot had been tipped as a possible medal winner in the 1500m and 1000m by Team GB coach Nicky Gooch. With the heats for her final remaining event scheduled for Wednesday, Christie said she was targeting a strong finish, despite suffering from a cold that she insisted had not affected her performance.
"They're both pretty similar and I'm good at both of them,” she said. “I felt I could medal them both and I've messed up one so at least I've got the other one.
"I've had just a bit of a cold and been really tired but I don't think that was physical because physically I thought I was better than at least one or two of them that just beat me.
"So I think it was all a mental thing. It's annoying but I'll get on with it."
