Top Scots boxing prospect Stephen Simmons has set his sights on the British crusierweight title after being inspired by the achievements of his friend and training partner Ricky Burns.
The Leith-born fighter, who travels to Billy Nelson’s gym in Shotts to train alongside the reigning WBO lightweight champion, says Burns is an “inspiration” having claimed his second world title with an impressive victory over Michael Katsidis earlier this month.
Simmons is currently making the final preparations for his third professional fight this weekend (Friday, November 25) on the undercard of Anthony Crolla's British Lightweight title defence against Willie Limond, having made his debut earlier this year.
But having trained alongside Burns and earned the champion’s respect, the ambitious 27-year-old believes he will not have long to wait for a title shot.
"Ricky trains like a warrior in the gym and he then takes that into the ring and what a performance it was against Katsidis.
“He is a real inspiration, I would be happy to win one world title let alone two.
"It's a real buzz having him in the gym and training beside him, he's just like one of the boys, he doesn't act like a world champion, he just acts like one of the boys and is a great guy to be around."
Simmons, who is boasts an unbeaten record since turning professional, has plenty of experience in the ring having earned a bronze medal at last year’s Commonwealth Games in Delhi.
Having secured back to back victories over Nick Okoth and Hari Miles, Simmons feels he has nothing to fear in the cruiserweight division having been less than impressed by reigning champion Leon Williams.
He said: “Hopefully everything goes to plan on Friday night.
“I could see myself having another fight in December, get on a card somewhere if they can squeeze me in.
"I don't think I'll be far away from fighting for the British title after watching the fight between Leon Williams and Rob Norton a couple of weeks ago."
