Glasgow Warriors moved up to third place in the RaboDirect PRO12 table after a convincing 19-9 win against Scarlets at Firhill.
Scotland international Ruaridh Jackson scored 14 of Glasgow’s points with the remainder coming courtesy of a Jon Welsh try. Scatlet scored nine from Dan Newton’s boot but could not find the penetration to worry Sean Lineen’s side.
Glasgow posed the greater threat in the early stages but could have suffered a setback when penalised for not rolling away. Newton had the chance to open the scoring for Scarlets but sent his kick wide.
It was then Jackson’s turn to fail with the boot when he missed a penalty but the fly-half was soon handed another opportunity. His break created a chance that petered out but Scarlets were penalised at the breakdown and Jackson was accurate with his penalty to put his side ahead.
Scarlets soon levelled with a penalty of their own but the action was uninspiring and though Glasgow dominated possession they were struggling to create.
Samoan winger David Lemi did his best to provide a spark and his chip through appeared to provide an answer. Scrum-half Gareth Davies was alert enough to make a cover tackle but he carried the ball over the line in the process.
From the scrum, Welsh carried over for the only try and Jackson added the extras.
The fly-half missed another penalty just before the break but was successful with another after the restart to extend Glasgow’s lead to 10 points. Newton replied with a penalty of his own and then narrowed the gap further with another accurate kick.
With no tries looking likely for either side, Jackson and Newton appeared to the most likely individuals to decide the contest. Two further penalties from the former ensured success for Glasgow and a rise in the table.
