It was a story of goals and great matches in Ligue 1 this weekend as teams scrambled for position in the Ligue 1 table.

It was a weekend of surprising results and big wins with some major implications on the title race and relegation battle.

The match between Ajaccio and Brest was not the most entertaining of fixtures and ended in a goalless draw. Ajaccio seem to be creeping back down the table. At present, they sit just one position above the relegation zone.

Buoyed by their victory over Lyon last week, Caen were caught slacking late in the game as Evian snatched a point.

Caen took the lead from the penalty spot when former Lille striker Pierre-Alain Frau stepped up to the plate. Cédric Barbosa equalised for Evian early in the second half before Livio Nabab put Caen ahead once more.

Caen should have seen the game out from there but Evian did not give up without a fight and former Lyon forward Sidney Govou scored a last-minute equaliser to ensure the points were shared.

Dijon were big winners in a 3-0 victory over Nice. Nice really are struggling this season and went behind just before half time as Gael Kakuta, on loan from Chelsea, gave Dijon the lead.

Brice Jovial added a second soon after the second half began before 22-year-old forward Koro Koné killed the game off to give Dijon the important victory.

Current champions Lille were narrow winners against Lorient. Right-back Mathieu Debuchy scored the only goal of the game midway through the second half to keep Lille firmly in the title race.

Toulouse were also big winners away to Nancy. Veteran midfielder Pantxi Sirieix put Toulouse ahead in under ten minutes.

Twenty-year-old right winger Adrien Regattin scored Toulouse’s second just ten minutes later but it was game, set and match in the second half when Emmanuel Riviere, who has struggled with injury since joining from St Etienne, struck a fine goal.

Sochaux and Auxerre battled to a 0-0 draw. With both of these sides currently in the relegation zone, both sides were desperate for three points.

Given the talent available to both sides, it would be surprising if they were to be relegated at the end of the season. Relegation does, however, look likely with each passing game.

The late kick-off on Saturday saw Marseille draw 1-1 with Valenciennes. With fans and pundits alike expecting a home victory, Alou Diarra put Marseille one goal up after just 15 minutes played.

Marseille, however, were unable to really impose themselves on the game and allowed Valenciennes to equalise early in the second half when Brazilian defender Gil scored his first goal for the club since signing from Cruzeiro in the summer.

Sunday’s fixture list kicked off in style as Lyon’s indifferent form continued with a defeat to the in-form Bordeaux. Bordeaux’s current top goalscorer Yoann Gouffran added to his tally for the season just before half-time to pile the misery onto Rémi Garde’s men, who are now 11 points adrift in the race for the title.

Lyon’s local rivals St Etienne threw their hat into the ring for the title race with a highly impressive 4-0 victory over Rennes.

Jean-Pascal Mignot scored the only goal of the first half as Rennes looked to use the half-time break to regroup.

It was not to be, though, as experienced midfielder Laurent Batlles added a second just after the beginning of the second half.

Bakary Sako added the third but the demolition was complete when former Leicester City and Leeds United forward Max Gradel struck late in the game.

The most important game of the weekend was undoubtedly the behemoth fixture of Paris Saint-Germain versus Montpellier.

With just one point separating the two at the summit of the Ligue 1 table, there was all to play for. PSG had the advantage when Alex found the back of the net with a missile free-kick minutes before the half-time whistle.

Just as it looked like PSG would hold the advantage going into the second half, Younes Belhanda struck an instant equaliser to ensure that the sides were level at half-time.

With both sides pushing for a winner, Montpellier got their noses in front when John Utaka headed home from a Giroud cross.

With the game edging closer to full time, substitute Guillaume Hoarau struck for PSG to make it 2-2 after some nice work by Jeremy Menez.

Ajaccio 0-0 Brest; Caen 2-2 Evian; Dijon 3-0 Nice; Lorient 0-1 Lille; Nancy 0-3 Toulouse; Sochaux 0-0 Auxerre; Marseille 1-1 Valenciennes; Bordeaux 1-0 Lyon; St Etienne 4-0 Rennes; PSG 2-2 Montpellier

Good week: Montpellier – Showed why they’re title contenders with a fine performance against PSG. The match may have finished 2-2 but Montpellier can be proud of their performance.

Bad week: Lyon – The side are currently on a bad run of form and things must improve soon if they are to remain in the race for the Champions League spots.
