Former Scotland captain Andy Nicol has maintained Andy Robinson is the right man to lead the national side despite a disappointing start to the Six Nations.
The Scots have lost their opening two matches to England and Wales meaning the Englishman has only won two out of twelve matches in the competition.
However Nicol says the 47-year-old should lead the side for the rest of the campaign.
He said: “For me Andy Robinson is undoubtedly the right coach for Scotland.
“Personally I’d like to see him stay around and lead us to the World Cup in 2015. But he and I both know that it’s a results driven business and in 12 Six Nations matches Andy has won two games and with the squad we’ve got that’s probably not good enough.
“If Scotland were to lose them (the next few games) then I think the pressure would be on.”
Nicol warned that making wholesale changes to the coaching team could result in Scotland getting worse rather than better.
He said: “I don’t think change is necessarily the right way. I think one or two changes might happen but I don’t think we’re a million miles away from being a good side.
“It’s that inability to convert the pressure and good opportunities into tries. It’s only one piece of the jigsaw but it’s a massive piece because without it, the jigsaw is not complete.
“I’d like to see a couple of personnel changes in the backs, the forwards are a match for anyone.”
On the campaign so far, Nicol says the Calcutta Cup loss to England at Murrayfield was particularly hard to take.
He said: “There’s no shame losing to Wales because they are a good side and taught us a lesson last weekend. They had five chances and took three of them while Scotland had the same number but only took one.
“I was really disappointed with the loss to England because I genuinely don’t think they are a great side.
“They are not in the same league as Wales, France or Ireland and Scotland missed a chance as the first game is so important. It now means we’re on the back foot.”
