Stephen Maguire believes Stephen Hendry should go down alongside Scotland’s sporting greats, following his decision to retire from snooker.

Seven-time world champion Hendry made the announcement over his future following his 13-2 defeat to Maguire at the quarter final stage of this year’s World Championship.

"Obviously there's a couple of football players who would think something different but I'm not a football fan so I would say yes," Maguire said when asked if Hendry deserved his place alongside sport’s greats.

"He's done everything in the game and he's done it with a bit of class."

Hendry has brought down the curtain on a glittering professional career, which started in 1985.

The Scot has won 36 ranking titles and six Masters, as well as achieving 775 career centuries.

With Hendry’s time on the circuit now at an end, Maguire believes the only current player who could challenge his status as the most decorated player of all time is fellow Scot John Higgins.

"I think the only one that can do it is John," Maguire said. "He's got four [World Championships] and John's got plenty of years left. He's the only one really I can see who can match it."
